VIEILLE MER phase 2
URBAN PROJECT
ARCHITECTURAL PROJECT OF A THEATRE
A fifth year project
Based on the urban strategy developed during the first phase of the project, I continued the work on a more precise scale by redesigning the five-hectare park Marcel Cachin. The park divided by streets is reunified and several new programs are introduced, such as an outdoor amphitheatre, housing projects, a theatre, playgrounds etc. The volume of ground removed in order to reopen the Vieille Mer that crosses this green space, is reused to create artificial topography protecting the park from the noise pollution coming from the busy avenue beside it.
On an architectural scale, I designed a theatre situated on the limit between the park and the avenue Lénine. The building emerges from the artificial topography and the waters of the Vieille Mer. It creates a threshold at the entrance of the park with a belvedere offering a view on the new landscape of the park Marcel Cachin and the Vieille Mer. The transparent volume of its ground floor surrounded by public space, incudes the reception, the ticket office and a restaurant with a terrace facing the park. The two floors below street level contain the main auditorium (300 people) with all its attached spaces, also exhibition spaces and adjustable multifunctional halls.
I completed the work on the park and the theatre by redesigning the avenue with its surroundings. A new square is situated in front of the theatre linking this new facilities and the park to the city on the other side of the avenue. A special attention is given to the qualification of the limit between the artificial topography and the avenue, several small-scale programs and street furniture are integrated into this interface. The free space between the housing blocks on the other side of the avenue is also redesigned sheltering new semi-underground car parks covered by mineral or vegetal gardens.
