A CENTER FOR CONTEMPORARY ART

A second year project

 

This exercise aims to create an architectural project by using the approach "from the whole to the parts". The program is a contemporary art center of which the design is based on an abstract image. To find this image, a preliminary work was realized employing black and white photos from well-known photographers. An analysis of the photo by various means helped us to deduce its principle lines of composition (real or virtual). The obtained diagram was then used as a section, plan or facade for creating the building.

 

I decided to use my diagram as a facade in order to create a building that is surprising, just as the contemporary art is. In this contemporary art center, one finds himself in another world free from the strict notions of the floor, the wall, the ceiling etc. The diverse inside and outside spaces, forming a smooth continuity, have different shapes, dimensions and light characteristics. Thus, they can be used for a multitude of various programs and art projects.
